Old School

I recently picked up this adorable kid's chair at an antique store, and I can't wait to put it to use in a photoshoot. I think it would perfect for a 2 or 3 year old. It's a little wobbly and needs to be fixed by my handy husband. And then, I plan to paint it a fun color! I'm thinking something like the turqoise color from my logo. Although, now that I see the photos I kind of like the look of the worn wood. What do you think? Paint or no paint?

I included the apple in this one to show the scale of the tiny chair.

Definitely paint it!! I like old wood, too, but a bright color like turquoise would really pop in pictures, I think! You could always distress the paint with a piece of sand paper to make it look old. It would expose some of the wood underneath.

Great find! I love getting stuff like this;-)

No paint! The little tag says "child's MAPLE chair" and maple wood has a natural warm glow, which would not take away from the subject of the portrait.

Cute chair -- looks great with the red apple -- maybe you could keep it the way it is and tell your subjects to wear bright colors, esp. red! Isn't the spring weather wonderful - soon the grass will be a lovely shade of green.

I say no pait. I love the idea of a turqoise chair, but really love the natural and worn look of this one. If you decide to paint, I would distress it to show some of the maple color through. Great find!

...well, ok, I wasn't going to say anything, but if you insist...I think that a child would be even more drawn to that chair if it were painted a bright color--thick and glossy turq. would be great--then sanded down to bare wood in the wear areas. I would prime it first and then that will be another layer to show thru...

no paint, i think the chair looks perfect the way it is. i like the idea of distressing it with paint, but isn't it already distressed? did you get this from the antique store with all the cats? i'm glad you finally found one!

Hmmm, so far I've got 2 paints, 4 no paints, and 1 paint and then distress. I love all the different opinions but you are not making this decision easy!

Michelle, yes! I did get it at the antique store with the cats. I was so excited and it was only $10! It was exactly what I was looking for.

...they also have transparent stains in colors like turq., green, red, yellow...just to confuse you even more...hehehe

What an adorable find! I think whatever you choose, the chair will look great in photos. I never thought about props for photoshoots. I'm pretty lazy like that...

Sarah, I am typically not a "prop" girl at all. But I think the chair is pretty cool and a great way to try to get a two or three year old to stay in one place for a second (I hope).

Paige, I love the chair. It's so cute and reminds me of some of the little old chairs that I have in my reading corner in my classroom. I painted mine bright primary colors and I like the idea of a bright turq. color for yours. I like the thought of distressing the paint. What about a crackled look? I doubt that I helped at all, but I can't wait to see what you decide to do.

So...late to the party here, what did you do?
I like the idea of a turquoise paint!
